Laughter will get you through

I am a diabetic, and I have learned to laugh my way through it. In times gone by I remember (vaguely) the somewhat humourous moments when I have suffered serious "hypo's" while working on a shift.

The kids on the shift thought I was dying and ran themselves ragged trying to get help. My face felt like a rubber mask as I tried to explain what was happening. A customer came to my rescue and I am eternally greatful to her for her quick thinking.

I told the story to a close friend of mine who has been a Type 1 most of his life and he laughed himself sick! He told me point blank...never stop laughing, live every moment like it is your last! So many experienced diabetics all say the same thing.

In 2006 I was in hospital 4 times, (hypoglycaemia, acidosis and a cardiac iscaemic event), yet I managed to keep my sense of humour no matter what.

When I see my friends eating pizza and chinese food, I could cry....yet the little voice inside me always reminds meĀ  ...You know what will happen if you do? Anyone who has suffered the misery of ketoacidosis will think twice.

Even so...you gotta laugh!!!
