My daughter had been sick for a few days, it started off like the flu and asthma. Everything I did didn't seem to be helping. I think back now and i think i knew it was diabetes but instead of her being in denial, I was because my perfect little girl couldn't have this horrible diease....
Ii knew a bit about diabetes as my father, my mother and myself had type 2 diabetes but nothing could prepare me for what we were in for.
As nothing was helping my daughter's so called flu and asthma,I took her to the doctors where they agreeed with my diagnosis -asthma and they gave her more Ventolin, after I told them she had already been on the machine at home, but somehow I must have been doing it wrong (after all my daughter had only been an asthmatic for 9 years!). When that didn't work they decided to give her quartazone and then told me to take her home and she would be alright in a couple of hours.
I took her home, still in destress, carried her into bed and went to chemist to get her script filled. By the time I came back she was confused and didn't make sense so I carried her out to the car and raced her to hospital. It was lucky for us there was a diabetes specialist from Sydney there because at first they thought she was hyperventilating and then this doctor asked my husband could she be a diabetic? That was the start of the roller coaster ride 4 years ago.
After they realised she was a diabetic she was put in ICU and we were playing the waiting game to see if she would be alright - they told us the next 48 hours were critical.
This would have to be one of the worst times in our lives, sitting, waiting, not being able to do anything to help our beautiful daughter lying there with drips in her arms. We were lucky in a lot of ways because we had a very good diabetic educator who helped us and to this day is always there when we need her.
