Live Life To The Fullest
Welcome to Diabetes Can't Stop Me - creating a happy, healthy life with diabetes.
Welcome to Diabetes Can’t Stop Me – a blog and community all about creating a happy healthy life with diabetes. I am Helen Edwards, writer and blogger, diabetes advocate, consultant and speaker. I am also online retailer of sustainable homewares, podcaster, wife, mama to 3 gorgeous boys, and lover of people and planet.
I have lived with type 1 diabetes since 1979 when I was 12 years old. I started a website called Diabetes Counselling Online in 2001 as a free online counselling service, supporting people all over the world living with diabetes, and ran this until 2016, when we closed our doors.
You can read more about me and the history of this service and blog here.
Being all about health and happiness does not mean Diabetes Can’t Stop Me is all about ignoring the hard parts of diabetes, or the hard parts about life! It is about sharing real stories, tips, ideas and inspiration; standing up for our rights, making sure people with diabetes are heard; and making connections. When you can see the whole picture, you see what is possible and you don’t let diabetes stop you living your life however you desire.
Life with diabetes is tough. But it is just one part of you and your life. I hear people talking about not using the word “diabetic” but for me, diabetic is part of who I am – I am also a writer, blogger, podcaster, retailer, mama, wife, singer, gardener, nature lover and conservationist, friend, and so much more.
There is much in life to experience and enjoy, and despite diabetes, you can have a happy, healthy life. And I think, personally, that diabetes makes us remarkable.
How do I know that?
I have lived with type 1 diabetes since 1979. Working in diabetes for so long, connected me to thousands and thousands of people across the world for 15 years, and I was a leader in diabetes and mental health. I talked with so many people over that time, who were really and genuinely, remarkable.
We closed that organisation in 2016 and I now own and run an online sustainable homewares store and blog, Recycled Interiors – which is one of my passions outside of diabetes. I realised that I needed something else in my life, another place to be, that was not related to diabetes, and so Recycled Interiors was born.
Yet still I needed a place to add my voice to the diabetes conversation, and Diabetes Can’t Stop Me is the place.
This site has come from my previous work at Diabetes Counselling Online, where our small team of passionate people supported thousands of people with diabetes and their families across the world. We were the leader in diabetes and mental health, and encouraging people to live happy, healthy lives WITH diabetes. Much of the content, blog posts and articles from that site are now housed here, so that all of that work is not lost. You can spend time rummaging around the site to find what you need.
Diabetes Can’t Stop Me is the next chapter in my journey! Join me for inspirational stories, sharing things about life with diabetes and connections. I have also started a closed group on Facebook to continue the diabetes conversation. Head here to join us. Please note this is not a support group or counselling service, and no medical advice or counselling will be given. We will also not allow any posts where people are seeking medical or other advice, or giving this to other members in the club. Comments and members who do so may be deleted without notice. The same goes for comments on this blog.
A laugh, inspiring thoughts, experiences are welcomed. Diabetes Can’t Stop Me – a place to get inspired about living a healthy happy life with diabetes.
